Position Summary:


Under the direction of the Division IP Counsel and as part of a small group, the European Patent Attorney will primarily provide patent drafting and prosecution support to the Electron Microscopy groups in the Materials and Structural Analysis Division, including research and development centers located in Europe as well as in the United States.  Located at the Eindhoven site in the Netherlands, there will also be opportunity to work on diverse legal matters such as business-strategic protection of IP, licensing, IP litigation management/support, and dispute settlement.  Some amount of international travel is required.


Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:


A minimum of 7 years of experience in EU patent prosecution and IP legal practice is required.  Experience in EU patent litigation, patent portfolio development, licensing, and enforcement in a corporate context is highly desirable.  Experience and/or interest in international IP law and international trade would be useful. 


Other Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to draft clear patent applications, amendments, legal and business documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently prosecute patent applications while maintaining strategic focus of original filing   
  • Strong English oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to analyze patentability and patent freedom-to-operate matters. 
  • Technical competence in one or more of the following fields:  Scientific instruments, Optics, Physics, Chemistry, or comparable technologies, and demonstrated ability to learn new scientific and technological fields relevant to Thermo Fisher product offerings. 


Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria: (List 3-5 key quantifiable skills or position requirements that the candidate must have to be considered for this position.)


  • BS or higher degree in physical sciences or a related engineering discipline.  
  • Registered as an EU attorney at the EPO at least 5 years. 
  • Ability to draft and prosecute patent applications and other documents in English.
